The recomp paradox
Three training days a week at moderate intensity, on a restricted anti-inflammatory diet, no surplus. By every bodybuilding rule that should have gone backwards.
It produced the best body recomposition of his life. Leaner, more muscular, better composition than years of aggressive training had managed.
| What he did | What should have happened | What happened |
| 3 days a week, moderate | Spinning wheels, losing muscle | Got leaner, muscle came back fast |
| Restricted diet, no surplus | No meaningful composition change | Best recomp of his life |
This guide is for the person doing everything right in the gym and getting nothing back. Clean diet, structured programme, disciplined lifestyle, and still bloated, exhausted and stuck on a plateau nothing breaks. The problem is almost never the training. Four reasons why.

Reason 01 · Inflammation was the ceiling
A body cannot build while it is surviving
Chronic gut inflammation locks the body in survival mode. It is not choosing to hold your physique back. It is diverting every available resource to an internal crisis.
- Resources go to the crisis, not to building muscle tissue.
- Cortisol stays elevated, driving muscle breakdown and fat storage at the same time.
- Anabolic hormones get suppressed. Testosterone, IGF-1 and growth hormone all take the hit.
- Nutrient partitioning goes sideways. Calories feed survival pathways rather than adaptation.
The insightWhen inflammation comes down the ceiling lifts. The same training stimulus that produced nothing starts producing, because the internal environment can finally respond to it.
Signs inflammation is your ceiling
A plateau that ignores calorie adjustments and programme changes. Composition unchanged on consistent training and clean food. Feeling puffy and inflamed while eating well. Recovery that stays slow regardless of sleep. Fullness and hardness never quite arriving.

Reason 02 · Absorption came back online
Eating perfectly means nothing if nothing absorbs
You can eat the most dialled in diet in the world, and if the gut wall is compromised, very little of it reaches the muscle.
| Where it breaks | What is happening |
| Stomach | H. pylori suppresses stomach acid. Without acid, protein does not break down properly no matter how much goes in. |
| Small intestine | SIBO ferments food instead of letting it absorb, so calories feed bacteria. Damaged villi cut the absorptive surface area down. |
| Colon | Butyrate producers missing means colon cells starve, the lining breaks down and inflammation climbs. |
Leaky gut also pulls immune resources away from normal recovery and muscle repair, and candida drives systemic inflammation that impairs intestinal function further.
The insightClear the pathogens and repair the lining and absorption restores. The same protein intake that did nothing starts building tissue, without changing a single macro.

Reason 03 · Cortisol normalised
The most underrated body composition driver there is
Most people try to manage cortisol from the outside. If the gut is inflamed, cortisol stays elevated regardless of what you do out there.
Gut inflammation signals danger to the brain along the vagus nerve. The brain raises cortisol against the perceived threat. Cortisol breaks muscle down for emergency energy and parks fat around the midsection. It suppresses thyroid function, which slows metabolic rate. It wrecks sleep architecture, which suppresses anabolic hormones further, and poor sleep drives more cortisol. The loop feeds itself.
| State | Muscle | Body fat |
| Chronically elevated | Breakdown accelerated, protein synthesis suppressed | Visceral accumulation, lipolysis impaired |
| Normalised | Protein synthesis upregulated, recovery improves | Fat oxidation restores, partitioning improves |
The insightBreak the gut inflammation and the cortisol loop breaks with it. Composition shifts without changing a single training variable, because the hormonal environment changed.

Reason 04 · The nervous system shifted
Sympathetic dominance quietly wrecks composition
This is not about mindset. It is about which hormonal environment the body runs in for twenty four hours a day.
- Digestion is suppressed in a sympathetic state, with blood flow routed away from digestive organs.
- Absorption drops even after pathogens are cleared, if the nervous system stays dysregulated.
- Muscle protein synthesis falls under chronic sympathetic activation.
- Fat oxidation is impaired while cortisol stays up, and insulin sensitivity drops with it.
- Recovery between sessions slows measurably.
The five tools he used
Sunlight
First thing every morning. Sets circadian rhythm, the cortisol awakening response and vitamin D production, which sets the hormonal tone for the whole day before anything else happens.
Cold exposure
Daily cold showers. Builds vagal tone, lowers systemic inflammation, trains the nervous system to change state quickly. Consistency beats intensity here.
Breathwork
Improves CO2 tolerance, oxygenates tissue and shifts the autonomic system out of sympathetic dominance. Before food or training gets the most out of it.
Humming
Vibrates the vagus nerve directly, which is the main line between gut and brain. Free, available anywhere, and five minutes registers.
Meditation
Anchors parasympathetic dominance. Ten minutes daily moves HRV and cortisol regulation over time, and the gut responds faster than most people expect.

Applying this to your situation
If you are stuck on a plateau, ask these before you change the programme.
- Bloating or digestive discomfort after meals, regularly.
- Energy inconsistent regardless of how much you sleep.
- Recovery beyond 48 to 72 hours from a normal session.
- Never had a GI Map or an MRT run.
- Stubborn midsection fat while otherwise lean.
- Composition unchanged no matter how calories or volume move.
The insightYes to any of these and the ceiling is internal. The answer is not more training or tighter macros.
The five steps
| Step | What it means |
| Test before you guess | GI Map and bloodwork first. Inflammatory markers, pathogens, microbiome diversity, hormone panel. Build around data, not assumption. |
| Pull inflammation first | Anti-inflammatory nutrition, nervous system work, food reactivity testing. The sequence matters more than any single intervention. |
| Address what testing found | Lining repair, a kill phase if pathogens are present, mitochondrial support, then reseeding. Full detail sits in The Healing Protocol. |
| Train to the environment | Pull volume back during healing. Three days a week, moderate. One war at a time. Composition often improves anyway. |
| Watch the body respond | The recomp is a side effect of healing rather than the target. Address the environment and the physique follows. |
Your physique is a reflection of your internal environment. The gut, the hormones, the nervous system and the mitochondria are the foundation of the result, not separate from it.
